Week 2A: Mindfulness II - Building Skills, Refining Practice

July 26-30, 2010, Deerhurst Resort, Huntsville

Our seminars run from 9:00 to 12:15 daily, allowing registrants to make use of the resort amenities in the afternoons.

Overview:

This course if for participants who have some prior exposure to or experience with mindfulness based approaches. It will assist participants in refining and further developing mindfulness-based approaches to working with physical and emotional pain, optimizing stress tolerance and enhancing occupational performance. A substantial portion of each class will be spent investigating formal and informal meditation practices. Small and large group discussions will allow participants to reflect on their own experiences with these mindfulness practices. A pre-course learning needs survey will be distributed to participants to allow tailoring of the course content to the needs of participants.

Topics:

How are we presently engaging with mindfulness approaches and practices? Review of formal mindfulness meditative practices (body scan, sitting or lying meditation, walking meditation, eating meditation, loving kindness meditation, visualization practices that support mindfulness). Introduction to new applications of mindfulness in clinical care. MBSR research update 2010.

 

Faculty:

 

Susan Abbey MD, FRCPC is a psychiatrist whose work is at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. She teaches MBSR at the University Health Network and is a collaborator in studies of the usefulness of MBSR in the management of hypertension and distress associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.  She has a personal mindfulness practice that helps her cope with the challenges of a busy professional life and two young children.

This educational program meets the accreditation criteria of The College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been accredited for 3 hour credits per session for participants to a maximum of 15 hours.

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada

This educational program is approved as an Accredited Group Learning Activity under Section 1 of the Framework of CPD options for the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, for 3 hours per session per participant to a maximum of 15 hours. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
