Week 1A: Evidence-Based Mental Health

Confirmed date and Location: July 13-17, 2009, Blue Mountain, Collingwood

Our seminars run from 9:00 to 12:15 daily, allowing registrants to make use of the resort amenities in the afternoons.

Overview:

This workshop will enable participants to develop their ability to quickly find answers in the research literature to questions they encounter in practice.  Participants will be coached in how to ask researchable questions, rapidly acquire answers from the literature, appraise articles (when necessary) and apply the results to clinical decision-making.  The workshop will be highly interactive, with opportunities to acquire and practice new skills.

Topics:

Concepts from clinical trial methodology such as randomization, blinding, concealment, intention-to-treat, relative and absolute risk reductions and number-needed-to-treat will be explored in detail.  The methodology of systematic reviews will also be reviewed.  Examples will be drawn from mental health practice and research but the concepts and skills will be applicable to all areas of medicine.
