Week 3B: Promoting Resilience and Preventing Burnout: Tools for Managing Work & Life August 9-13, 2010, Deerhurst Resort, Huntsville Our seminars run from 9:00 to 12:15 daily, allowing registrants to make use of the resort amenities in the afternoons. Overview: Physicians today are dealing with demands from multiple directions with limited time, energy & skills to manage them. In this interactive workshop participants will be introduced to concepts & tools to help them manage themselves & others, negotiate time & resources, understand & resolve conflict, & deal with the “stuff” of everyday life. Through reviews of relevant literature in the fields of psychology & business & opportunities for reflection, participants will develop a framework for promoting resilience & preventing burnout in their work & home life. Topics: Managing Yourself–exploration of emotional intelligence, leadership styles, defining your values and motivations; Managing Others I–understanding and managing conflict, and having difficult conversations; Managing Others II–determining needs, approaches to negotiation including how to negotiate a “no”; Managing Your Environment–managing time, projects and information; managing meetings; Moving Towards Resilience–aligning your work to create purpose, meaning and passion; recognizing and preventing burnout.
Sarah Jarmain, MD, FRCPC is
an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Western
Ontario & Joint Site Chief for RMHC London & St. Thomas. She is
also the Vice Chair, MAC & Assistant Director of Medical Quality for SJHC
London. She has been actively involved in curriculum development for
medical students & residents, & has held a number of administrative
positions within the Department of Psychiatry including Director of
Undergraduate Education in Psychiatry. She has also been interested in helping
trainees & psychiatrists gain the leadership & administrative skills to
be able to effectively function in today’s health care environment, & in
promoting a resilient work culture. She has presented numerous workshops to

The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada This educational program is approved as an Accredited Group Learning Activity under Section 1 of the Framework of CPD options for the Maintenance of Certification Program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, for 3 hours per session per participant to a maximum of 15 hours. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
